Westward-Propagating Rossby Modes in Idealized GCMs

چکیده

Abstract This work investigates the characteristics of westward-propagating Rossby modes in idealized global general circulation models. Using a nonlinear smoothing algorithm to estimate background spectrum and an objective method extract spectral peaks, four leading meridional can be identified for each first three zonal wavenumbers, with frequencies close predictions from Hough obtained by linearizing about state rest. Variations peak amplitude different modes, both within simulation across simulations, may understood under assumption that forcing scales spectrum. Surface friction affects width peaks but remain finite as goes zero, which implies some other mechanism, arguably nonlinear, must also contribute damping modes. Although are observed precipitation field moist physics, there is no evidence mode enhancement convective heating. Subject same friction, very similar dry models when normalized spectra.

Null modes effect in Rossby wave model

The problem of the null-modes existence and some particularities of their interaction with nonlinear vortex-wave-like structures is discussed. We show that the null-modes are fundamental elements of nonlinear wave fields. The conditions under which null-modes can manifest themselves are elucidated. The Rossby-Hasegawa-Mima (RHM) model is used for the illustration of features of nullmodes-waves ...

The Superposition of Eastward and Westward Rossby Waves in Response to Localized Forcing

Rossby waves are a principal form of atmospheric communication between disparate parts of the climate system. These planetary waves are typically excited by diabatic or orographic forcing and can be subject to considerable downstream modification. Because of differences in wave properties, including vertical structure, phase speed, and group velocity, Rossby waves exhibit a wide range of behavi...

Propagating modes in subwavelength cylindrical holes

We analyze subwavelength cylindrical holes in an optically thick metallic film with the metal described by a plasmonic model. We emphasize that such holes always support propagating modes near the surface plasmon frequency, regardless of how small the holes are. Based on this analysis, we design both single holes and hole arrays in which propagating modes play a dominant role in the transport p...

Nonlinear localized and propagating modes in metamaterials

Discrete magnetic metamaterials (MMs) comprised, e.g. of periodically arranged nonlinear split-ring resonators (SRRs), may support highly localized excitations in the form of discrete breathers (DBs) [1]. In practice, the SRRs can become nonlinear by the insertion of nonlinear electronic components into their slits [2]. Recently, a novel MM comprised of two types of SRRs was investigated theore...

Propagating Spin Modes in Canonical Quantum Gravity

One of the main results in canonical quantum gravity is the introduction of spin network states as a basis on the space of kinematical states. To arrive at the physical state space of the theory though we need to understand the dynamics of the quantum gravitational states. To this aim we study a model in which we allow for the spins, labeling the edges of spin networks, to change according to s...
